Chen
Lei Zuo is the Herbert C. Sadler Collegiate Professor of Engineering at the University
of Michigan, with appointments in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and Mechanical
Engineering Departments. His research spans marine renewable energy—including ocean waves,
tidal currents, and offshore wind—energy harvesting, vibration control, mechatronic design, and
advanced manufacturing. His work integrates fundamental dynamics and modeling, control codesign,
multidisciplinary optimization, prototype development, and experimental validation,
including laboratory, lake, and ocean testing. Professor Zuo’s research has been supported by more
than $47 million through over 130 projects from federal agencies and industry partners. He has
authored more than 400 publications and has supervised or mentored more than 100 graduate
students and postdoctoral researchers and more than 400 undergraduate students. His honors
include the ASME Leonardo da Vinci Award, ASME N.O. Myklestad Award, ASME Thar Energy
Design Award, ASME McDonald Mentoring Award, UM Distinguished Faculty Mentor Award,
two R&D 100 Awards, and the SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award.
